Valencia CF's Hugo Guillamón and SD Huesca's Sergio Gómez are close friends, and have experience in duels against one another from the start of their careers, when their paths crossed at youth tournaments around Spain. Guillamón is a VCF Academy product, whilst Gómez played for RCD Espanyol, moving to FC Barcelona and subsequently signing for Borussia Dortmund in 2018.
Whilst never on the same team at club level, they spent time together in the national team setup. The Spain Under-16s training camps were where they bonded, and they are inseparable when called up for international duty.
Guillamón and Gómez have shared success with 'La Rojita,', winning the Under-17s European Championships, the Mediterranean Games and the Under-19s European Championships.
"This weekend's game is a special one for both of us," said Guillamón on Thursday. "We've played against one another many times, and we know each other to perfection. We know how the other one thinks."
"Sergio makes decisions quickly, has a great vision of the game, strikes the ball well, moves between the lines and links up very well with everybody."
A more serious affair than their favourite activity together -watching Rafa Nadal play tennis- this weekend's LaLiga match between Valencia CF and Huesca is a chance for the pair to face one another at senior level. Whilst not guaranteed that they will feature, Guillamón and Gómez have agreed to swap shirts after the game if they are fielded by their respective coaches.
